You'll find a new track on my Soundcloud account tonight, On the Leash. This song started out with the slow, arpeggiated guitar lick that accompanies the verse. All the guitar parts were played on my Amistar resonator guitar, which has a sweet little P-90 pickup on it. The thick acoustic strings sound tight and aggressive through the snarling Octavix fuzz and the distorted Vox AC-30 amp. I also made full use of the glorious feedback generated by the hollow body guitar.
The lyrics were inspired by the current debate around the effect of social media on democracy:
Your eyes are glued to the video screen
You’re not one of them
You’re one of them
Never question the things you have seen
You’re not one of them
You’re one of them
And then you hear the sirens call
And you can’t bury your head in a hole
You worry and yearn to believe
You’re one of them
You’re one of them
And the smell of blood spreads everywhere
They’re on the leash
They’re on the leash
You hear them barking now
And the idols will not hear your prayer
You’re on the leash
You’re on the leash
I hear you barking now
The show is on again to feed your fear
You’re not one of them
You’re one of them
When your demons seem the most sincere
You’re not one of them
You’re one of them
And you are blind to what’s going on
And you can’t tell what’s right or wrong
Unmoored and you yearn to believe
You’re one of them
You’re one of them
And the smell of blood spreads everywhere
They’re on the leash
They’re on the leash
You hear them barking now
And the idols will not hear your prayer
You’re on the leash
You’re on the leash
I hear you barking now
And the puppet masters wash their hands
We’re on the leash
We’re on the leash
I hear us barking now
And the cynics have their feast again
We’re on the leash
We’re on the leash
I hear us barking now
